Road Trip Wednesday
Over at YA Highway, they have Road Trip Wednesday.
1. If you've never checked out YA Highway, you should.
2. Road Trip Wednesday this week is If you could go on a writing retreat anywhere in the world, where would you go and who would you bring? If time and money were no object, where would you shut yourself to write the great American novel? What friends, crit partners, or authors (living or dead) would you bring with you?
I love this question.
I'd go back to Sarajevo. I was there in 2007 and while I've felt more home in other cities I've traveled to, I don't think I've ever felt so moved by a city as Sarajevo. I felt haunted. I felt like I was grasping desperately at strings of understanding and always missing. I think that I would like to live there and write forever and a day. The only other city that came close was Kyiv, Ukraine but the people were friendlier in Sarajevo and if I'm going to feel lost, I want at least to be lost amongst friendly faces.
Who would I bring with me?
My cats. I don't go anywhere without my cats. I surprisingly write them infrequently into my stories. Maybe that should change. So my 4 cats would come with me.
My friend Ben because he's always my first reader and because I spend a large part of our conversations bouncing writing ideas off of him.
The internet connection I have at work because it's fast and stable and nothing in Sarajevo was and I need to be able to stay in contact with all of my friends and writing blogs or I will lose my mind.
Who would I bring with me who can't feasibly come with me? John Green, JK Rowling, Toni Morrison, Neil Gaiman, Ray Bradbury, Veronica Roth, and Ingrid Michaelson & Greg Laswell.
